I think it's funny when I read our newsletter and how the new house on Kipling was being praised and praised. It does not fit into our neighborhood at all but since the owner is in the "click" it gets praise. I like the other new homes a lot more. I hope the exterior pepto bismol color is changed before the entire house is painted.

Although I created this blog, I must admit to not being a frequent user, it's simply not my habit. I hoped that it would be a positive platform for Winlow Place neighbors to discuss their differences and find some common ground. Whether or not you agree with Mike, he's sharing his knowledge and his experiences since moving into the neighborhood. I personally strongly disagree with Mike about 'tearing down old homes', but rather than telling him to 'move out', how about trying to find a middle ground and explore our differences -- and what we have in common. What we all have in common is that we love this neighborhood and we want it and it's inhabitants to prosper.
Not all people are going to agree on the size or style of homes and we are not going to stop new construction in Winlow Place, but we have strong deed restrictions. I know, I helped get them passed and I support them. They are available for anyone wanting to move into the neighborhood.
What will cause Winlow Place to fall on hard times is not what brick and mortar is built or torn down, but the destruction of relationships between neighbors and the unwillingness to reach out in fellowship and understand our neighbors point of view.
If we are willing to take that extra step and try to understand each others values and points of view, we can solve any problem.

Vernon Durke
Winlow Place Security board member

I've lived in this neighborhood for almost 10 years and the mean attitude is making me think about moving out of this neighborhood. What have we become? Our neighborhood is very diverse - duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, apartments, condos, tonwhomes. What do we want? It sounds like we want to control everything. Actually, that is the way those other suburbs in Sugarland, Katy, Woodlands, etc are. Interesting?

Many of its regulars considered it the most beautiful and pleasing coffeehouse in Houston. The thriving business doubled as an unofficial neighborhood community center.

Last Sunday, it shut down.

Its lease was not renewed, and Diedrich owner Dirk Smith said he doesn't know why.

Smith said he was about to sign a new lease until landlord Bradford Schmalfuss, vice president of T-Con Properties, suddenly changed his mind with no explanation.
