Vernon: Thank you so much for creating this very valuable Winlow Place blog for all of us. This is a fantastic communication tool to corral our many neighborhood discussion topics into one website. I hope that all residents use our WP blog to share pertinent information...especially security issues!

NEIGHBORS: PLEASE POST ANY SECURITY ISSUES YOU ENCOUNTER (OR HEAR ABOUT) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO THIS WEBSITE. THE INTERNET IS THE FASTEST AND MOST CONVENIENT WAY POSSIBLE TO SHARE INFORMATION. TAKE CARE OF YOUR NEIGHBORS AND LET THEM KNOW IMMEDIATELY OF ANY SECURITY ISSUES THAT YOU HAVE OR HAVE HEARD ABOUT.

      THANKS MUCH!

Last Monday evening (Sept. 18), around 7:30 pm, my daughter pulled into the driveway and ran inside to change clothes before heading back out to a study group at UH. In the few minutes she was inside (and I was just 20 feet away, in the living room playing the piano), someone broke into her car and stole her purse and book bag. Lucky for us that a couple days later an apartment manager tracked my daughter down through a prescription in the bag -- the manager had found the bag inside the gated apartment complex across the street from the Alabama Ice House -- and my daughter got her bag back (minus school ID, driver's license, credit cards, cash and textbooks).

Three nights later, at about 9 pm, we were watching TV when both dogs jumped up barking. My son looked up just in time to see a young blond white man on a BMX-style bike riding fast out of our driveway. We don't know if he was the thief of a few nights earlier looking for more stuff, but he was far up in our driveway next to the garage, between cars, when the dogs apparently frightened him.

Keep your eyes and ears open!

FYI - Three instances of crime have occurred at my duplex in the past 3 months. (1) My bike was stolen from my backyard - which is and was gated and locked. (2) My car was broken into in front of my duplex. Fortunately, I don't keep any valuables in it, so nothing was stolen. However I did have to replace the passenger's side window. (3) My boyfriend's truck was stolen from in front of my duplex. It was found 2 weeks later at an impound lot. The amount of crime on my block has been quite alarming recently. I just wanted to share with my neighbors, so that we may all keep our eyes peeled. Sincerely, Holly Stewart (1833 Harold)

        Holly,

The meter readers jump the fence into your yard all the time and can easily see anything that is not "nailed down" while they are there.

      Hi Neighbors:

Please do not leave cash in your cars as mine was again broken into last Thursday night (corner of Kipling and Woodhead.) Due to the nice weather I had taken the rear windows off my Jeep, so the culprits had easy access to its contents. They made a huge mess of everything, but were probably just looking for money (not Yoga mats and hand weights!)

So, be careful and always lock your car and house!

Last night (10/21/06)a friend's car was broken into (it was only purchased last weekend). He had parked it on Hazard near Hawthorne by Lanier. They broke the back window and sliced open the fabric convertible top. A camera bag was stolen. I wanted to let you all know in case this was an increasing trend in the neigborhood.

Have a question about GRAFFITI. I reported some graffiti on our utility pole (Hazard, close to Hawthorne) to the online 3-1-1 site, but if anyone knows another way to report it I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

We have to get a handle on the "taggers", somehow.
